Certified Organic Wool

At Dust Factory Vintage Clothing we always look forward to new to new seasons fashion collections, this coming Autumn/Winter 2011 is no exception.

Our favorite go to choice for fabrics is Recycled Textiles, however our favorite natural fiber of the season is organic wool. But as EcoSalon’s Amy DuFault points out (via Ecco Eco), there are both “environmental and ethical complexities of this natural fiber we so adore.

Last year O-Wool, the leading certified-organic wool at the time, was beginning to fold due to financial reasons. Since then, Tooney Wool Company in Philadelphia, PA, has become the new big dog and owner and distributor of certified-organic-yarns. Whose past clientele list is rather impressive with brands like Patagonia, Timberland, J.Crew, Linda Loudermilk, Diane von Furstenberg, Loomstate, Bahar Shahpar, and Bodkin.

Tree Hugger has great sideshow presentation with Tom’s of Maine Founder showing you how to Produce Ethical Wool undergarments. Check Here to View!

In an interview with EcoSalon, Jocelyn Tunney, of Tunney Wool Company, says “One would want to purchase organic wool for the same reasons as one would want to purchase organic food.” She continues, below.

It’s a more sustainable farming solution, is kinder to the animals and is healthier for the consumer. Conventional wool is grown like conventional food – the land and sheep are sprayed and dipped in pesticides as a cheap means to increase salable product. The land [certified-]organic wool comes from has to go through the same transition and certification process as the land organic food comes from.”

Let’s not forget when it comes to purchasing wool products the most ecological wool is the the stuff you already have hanging in your closet, recycled wool or what you find at a vintage clothing store or thrift shop is close second. However when you don’t have either of these options you should make sure that you are purchasing certified-organic and mulesing-free wool.

Vintage Clothing + Rock & Roll = SXSW

Vintage Clothing and Rock n Roll
Every year in the middle of March Austin, Texas turns into the music Mecca of the world when they host their annual South by Southwest® (SXSW) conference. According to their website (http://sxsw.com/) the South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Conferences & Festivals offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW is the premier destination for discovery. This year marks the 25th anniversary for the SXSW Music and Media conference. It always starts out with the SXSW® Film Conference and Festival , although the past three years they have ran a Multi-Media conference with the film conference then the music starts. The conference switches gears into a full blown music conference. This is not to be mistaken as a music  festival like ACL or Coachella, it is nothing like that. This is a full blown conference with musicians from all around the world playing all genera of music at different venues throughout the city. Some you have heard of, some are hoping to get noticed, it is amazing.

Check out the below video of Hometown Artist Suzanna Choffel as she gets ready to play the big stage:

What is so unique about this conference is not only the artists and musicians that they attract all around the world, but the parties and concerts that are going on just about anywhere. Most of these Non-SXSW parties have nothing to do with the event itself, but since the bands and the promoters are all in one place, there is no telling what can go on. We have friends that have caught Willie Nelson putting on a show at a Gas Station one year, where another group of friends caught Morrisey playing at a bowling alley. One of our favorite non-SXSW parties has to be at Cream Vintage, right off of the drag. For the past 7 years Cream Vintage has hosted parties featuring bands like Sweden’s Division of Laura Lee, to New York’s We are Scientists, each band is unique and so is each day of the party.

Vintage Clothing and Rock n Roll

Cream Vintage is located right off of the Drag on Dean Keaton Avenue across from the University of Texas. The party is in the parking lot behind the store. So basically you walk through a killer vintage clothing store packed with a huge selection of vintage dresses, vintage jeans, vintage t-shirts and more, into their back yard parking lot area. That is where they have a stage set up with live music, more Texas Select Beer than you can imagine, and just an all around killer vibe. Cream Vintage always hosts one day of the party with local bands from Austin and surrounding areas in Texas, then leases out the spot to different promoters from around the world on the other days. Needless to say the event is always pretty spectacular and they variety of talent that one can catch is truly amazing.

If you are in Austin right now, head on over the Cream Vintage and be ready to have your mind blown.

How To… and How Not To Wear Boots

how to wear motorcycle bootsOk it is that time of year again, or that time when fashion completes a cycle and boots are back in style. Well the truth of the matter is that they have been back in style for a while, and now not only are hipster little girls rocking the motorcycle boots and the Doc Martins over their skinny jeans or leggings, but their Prada tote bag carrying mothers are rocking the western boots and fashion boots as well. With so many different types of boots and different styles to wear them with the questions has to be raised, “Is there a wrong way to wear boots?” Well the answer to this questions lies in the mind of the beholder, the simple answer is… perhaps? However the correct answer will depend upon what perspective you take towards the question. One could just as easily as asked, “Is there a right way to wear boots,” or “how do you wear motorcycle boots with an outfit,” taking this into consideration, if there is a right way to wear boots, or directions on how to wear boots, then the obvious answer is, yes, there is wrong way to wear to boots.
how to wear boots
The correct way, or another way to put that would be to say, one way to wear boots is to make sure the pants or leggings that you are wearing are tight fitting so that you can tuck them into the boot. Let’s face it, we are not trying to look like June Carter Cash or a Cowgirl right off of the rodeo circuit, we are not going to wear these boots with boot-cut jeans and a large belt buckle, these are to be worn with something tight and dare I say a little revealing. Up top you can wear a over sized shirt to cover up your ASS-ets if need be, or tight little blouse to let is all show. The wrong way to do this would be to wear your pants over the boot, or wear something to revealing that does not work with your body.
If you think that skinny jeans are for toddler teenie-boppers and those  leggings are just to 1990, then try wearing your boots with a fashionable skirt or mini dress.

Functional Food and Sustainable Packages

cardboard people
This weekend was the annual gathering of ancient grains, coconut water, fair trade chocolates, protein bars, and organic pet food in Orange County, that is at least where where baobab and sea buckthorn joined acai, goji berry and chia seeds, the reigning antioxidant-rich superfoods. There was overwhelming sea of 3,000 exhibitors, displayed across the exhibit floor of enticing organic foods, healthy items and green goods at the annual Natural Products Expo West convention and conference, March 10-13, seemed like all the world eats well and lives sustainably. But then reality struck.

There are mMore than 56,000 gathered for this 31st fest, with an increased visibility on non-GMO foods and eco-packaging. With aisle after aisle of vendors from Nature’s Path to Earth Balance, from omega-rich supplements to “pure” and “smart” items, it’s clear the message was healthy and environmental. Compared to two years ago, it was hard to find a plastic bottled water booth, through other drinks overflowed from teas to brain tonics, digestive beverages to chillout elixirs.

Green Packageing container

To us, one of the big hits of this event was Seventh Generation’s new cardboard bottle for its Natural 4X Laundry Detergent. We love great designs, but green packaging is just one small part of a sustainable design and product. Designed with Ecologic Brands, it features a recyclable and compostable outer shell of recycled newspapers and cardboard and a recyclable monopolymer film pouch inside with no nylon or laminates. It reduces the plastic by 66 percent and when empty, it’s stackable. so nine times more efficient to ship.

Classic Furniture from the ’50’s is Re-Issued

classic vintage chair
Photo: Rocket Chair

Just like clothing the design of furniture can fall out of fashion for a while, then back into fashion as time rolls on. This classic chair by the Jen Risom’s collection is one piece that fell back into style. Jens Risom was at the peak of his success in the late 1950’s. His slogan back then for his work was: The Answer is Risom. The Danish-born American still has the designing spirit at the ripe ol age of 94, and has worked closely with a London gallery to re-issue 9 pieces of his simple, American-style Scandinavian Furniture.

This first collection of his nine chosen pieces has been a labor of love involving a London Gallery, Rocket, and a furniture company that does handmade pieces.

Vintage Furniture Designer

All of his pieces are very functional but still very much elegant. They still have a definite Scandinavian influence but it is intertwined with American Modernism. With the number of his original pieces declining, this is another opportunity to celebrate design and reputation of an old master craftsman.
